Poppies! Poppies! Poppies!

Poppies - Week 24 of 52
B and I love our yard. It's been four years since we put it in. Our dear friend A.S. from South Carolina designed the yard and Eschenfelder Landscaping executed the design. We spend a lot of time entertaining in our backyard but like the house, the yard is a work in progress. A few weeks ago we put in the vegetable garden and we are still adding more veggies to it. I promise to post some pictures soon.

This past week we added more plants to the flower beds. We are not one for annuals so we are always on the hunt for new perennials to add. The newest addition are flowers I've always loved, poppies! I think it was appropriate to plant them on Memorial Day.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918)
